Travel Photo of the Week

_DSC4918 copy

Well done to armin88 for winning this week’s travel photography competition with his dynamic portrait of a Mexican dancer.

Why this Photo Won

It is often said that a portrait has to be perfectly sharp. Using a faster shutter speed would have made this image much sharper, but the dynamic movement would have been lost. I love the sense of movement combined with the costume and look of concentration.

Monastery of the Clouds by Michael Anderson

Monastery of the Clouds by Michael Anderson

Congratulations to Michael Anderson for winning this week’s travel photo of the week with his stunning take of the Tengboche Monastery. Here is what Michael had to say about the image:

“The famous Tengboche Monastery floats over heavenly clouds under the shadow of Mt Everest. The monastery has been there for centuries. I climbed this ridge to get a better view of Ama Dablam and Mount Everest which are above me to the right. After the alpengow faded from Everest, I looked back down and this scene before me was even more compelling. I flipped the camera around and got a few shots before the fast moving clouds engulfed the monastery. Climbers enroute to Everest often stop here for a blessing by the local lama before they continue on to basecamp.”

Why this Photo Won

This image has all the elements of a perfect travel image: an exotic location, great light, awesome atmospheric conditions and a perfect composition. Don’t assume that taking an image like this is easy. Once you’ve climbed what is no doubt, a challenging ridge, you still have to balance the light and climb back down under darkness.

Also worth mentioning is black.paper.press’s photo stream of the Haiti elections.

Travel Photo of the Week

wave-motion

Congratulations to Dale Ruebin for winning this week’s travel photo of the week with his minimalistic take of a seascape.

Why this Photo Won

I envy people who are able to do this sort of photography. I’ve often been inspired by minimalistic seascapes, but my own attempts always leave me feeling disappointed. It is remarkably difficult to capture a scene like this in a way that appeals artistically.

The muted tones and colour add to the overall effect and the wave adds just enough detail to make the picture interesting.

Straumur on EXPLORE!

Congratulations to Kristján Jóhann for winning this week’s travel photo of the week with his fascinating take of the Northern Lights over Staumur, Iceland.

Why this Photo Won

I had a difficult time choosing a winner this week with so many different entries that could have won. This specific image stuck out in my mind for a little longer than the others though. I’ve always been fascinated by the Northern Lights and long to shoot them. Everytime a see a picture of the lights, I’m mostly dissapointed with the picture. The lights normally look fantastic, but the foreground leaves a lot to be desired.

Kristjan, however, managed to capture the lights very well and also managed to have a compelling foreground. I love the lead in road throug the snow and the reflection in the lake.

Faces that tell a story | Hope

Congratulations to Shivakumar for winning this week’s travel photo of the week with his outstanding portrait.

Why this Photo Won

Low key portraits that hint something about the subject’s character are often far more interesting than strait forward portraits. The lighting seems to add a sense of mystery to the picture that makes you want to know more about the subject.

According to the photo description, the lighting used was natural window light. This image demonstrates excellent control and manipulation of natural lighting to give an almost studio effect to the lighting.

Travel Photo of the Week

portrait

Congratulations to greenecam who took this excellent portrait of a violin player in Berlin, Germany.

Why this Photo Won

The expression of the subject, combined with his connection to the photographer (and therefore the viewer) make this a captivating portrait. Technically, it has been very well executed. The shadow detail on the left hand side of the subjects face is subtle enough to give shape to the face without loosing any of the detail. Deeper shadow would have resulted in a much more menacing look, which wouldn’t have suited the subject.

The shadow reflection is a very nice touch and deliberately including it in the composition has added depth to the image.

The main reason that I chose this image was that it is a great example of an image that captures emotion and it also technically flawless. I find many photographers tend to focus on either making an emotional connection or getting the technical details correct, to the detriment of the other. It is rare to accomplish both.

Travel Photo of the Week

Longboat Key, Early Morning

This week’s travel photo of the week goes to Lewis Golbourn for his enchanting seascape along the Florida Keys.

Why this won

In terms of artwork that hangs on gallery walls, the colour palette of this image works brilliantly. The morning pastels create a sense of peace that is really easy on the eye. The unusual composition also adds to the uniqueness of this image. With the horizon placed almost in the center of the image and very little foreground or background anchors, this composition works because of its minimalistic, almost surreal feel.
