Photo Stories – Alfred
As we explore the world, we meet fascinating people. I met Alfred whilst shooting landscapes at the main beach at Sedgefield.
Alfred is a car guard. Car guards have become a part of modern day South African culture. Basically, a car guard will watch over your car whilst you do your touring/shopping/etc. Essentially, it is a good idea. You get peace of mind that your car is protected and a car guard gets a source of income. Unfortunately, a lot of car guards have become a bit of a nuisance. You get the feeling that if you don’t employ them, your car will get a decent sized scratch as a thank you. Car guards also tend to mysteriously appear as you are about to leave and demand money for a service you never asked for.
Alfred is completely different. His friendly nature makes you want to employ him. The incredible thing about Alfred is that he is handicapped from the waist down. To enable him to guard the cars in the parking lot, Alfred has a specially modified bike that he can “peddle” with his arms.
To me, Alfred represents the positive nature that so many South Africans seem to share. Being disabled, poor, uneducated and constantly surrounded by mansions and expensive cars, Alfred could justify being an angry guy. Instead, he is making the most of his situation with a wonderful attitude and the Sedgefield locals seem to love him.
If you’re ever visiting Sedgefield (which you should), make sure you find Alfred and ask him to watch your car

He seems like a really cool guy! Nice story! Stories like that make me miss home…
